Lobate Scarps: D'Alembert

Animation, Editing

Lobate scarps are long, thin, fault-like structures on the lunar surface. They are intrepreted to be the result of techtonic activity, however, the Moon doesn’t have shifting techtonic plates like Earth. Because the scarps are distributed around the entire Moon, as shown in LROC images, this indicates that the scarps form as the Moon’s crust contracts while its core cools, almost like wrinkles on the lunar surface.
